Go For the Gold!

It is hard to believe the Olympics are over and we are thinking how we want to keep the spirit of the Olympics alive.

We have decided that we will be awarding some medals of our own to acknowledge those local retailers that are eliminating the sale of cosmetic pesticides and are putting our health and the environment first.

Although Richmond has passed a cosmetic pesticide bylaw that restricts the use of pesticides on lawns, gardens and parks, there currently exists a loophole that still allows local retailers to sell these harmful pesticides.

We have called upon the provincial government to ban the sale of pesticides in B.C. so that retailers, that we feel are unethically selling pesticides when a bylaw is in effect, will be forced to remove them from their shelves.

Many healthier alternatives to synthetic pesticides exist, and the following retailers have chosen to carry them and have removed the more harmful ones from their shelves.

AND THE GOLD MEDALS GO TO...

HOME DEPOT (eliminated the sale of cosmetic pesticides in 2008)

RONA (eliminated the sale of cosmetic pesticides in 2009)

GARDEN WORKS

SILVER MEDALS are awarded to those companies and organizations that have taken steps to eliminate pesticides and are striving for a healthier tomorrow.

THE CITY OF RICHMOND (has made great strides with a cosmetic pesticide bylaw but earns a silver because they continue to use pesticides on the pitch & putt and on the lawn bowling green)

PRICKLY PEAR GARDEN CENTRE (are currently transitioning to more natural pesticides)

The following companies have FAILED TO RECEIVE A MEDAL as they continue to carry pesticides on their shelves and have NOT set a timeline for elimination. Please remind these retailers that you would like to see them eliminate cosmetic pesticides from their shelves!

Art Knapp's
Canadian Tire
Home Hardware, Lansdowne Mall

Please support those companies that have taken harmful lawn and garden pesticides off their shelves. Please let us know of local retailers that we can add to our recommended list. Thanks!

  1. Kiss my ass you socialist animals. If you want to come and pull the weeds and fight the moss, be my guest (of course you won't as you suckle from the public teat), I work for a living and if I can't get these useful tools here, I will get them somewhere else.

GO ART KNAPP! you continue to give us what we want.

  2. Yes, pesticides are useful. They make your life easier, at least for a little while, until you begin to get sick, or your kids, or your animals die early from cancer. Yes, this has been happening all over, to countless people. Maybe you don't hear about it or maybe you aren't listening, but those 'animals' you speak of finally figured it out. You need to get with the decade my friend. Read more, get educated. We can't live in a polluted world anymore. Pesticides KILL things; that's their point, or do you blindly negate this when you destroy the plants you don't want. Pesticides are not discrimanetory. They also live in the bodies of every human that uses them for a living; permanently. If that's the kind of world you want, move. The moon has no plants I believe...

  3. It is unfortunate that your organization has choosen to blacklist locally owned and operated companies. These business hire Richmond residents, pay their share of taxes and support the community through donations and community initiatives. Art Knapps has a large selection of organic pest management products, with Nematodes arriving soon! Companies such Art Knapps and Prickly Pear have staff trained on the proper applications of these products which they are legally allowed to sell. Your organizations desire to blacklist these companies is unfair. Options are provided, the choice is the customers. Continuing to educate the public on the organic options is admirable, trying to destroy locally owned and operated businesses that support this community is not.

  4. Hello Anonymous, I recognize you - the post from the accountant at Art Knapps. Art Knapps will never see my face (or thousands of Richmond faces that believe Art Knapps only wants to make money, not care for their customers). Art Knapps and other businesses will not be destroyed from a few loss of sales of pesticides. If your business is that bad, get out of it. You would be smart to care about the kids of Richmond more than your own back pockets.
